How to choose the right blog topics for your store

The mistake most ecommerce blogs make is generating ideas in isolation — one disconnected post at a time. Topics that win on Shopify are organized into clusters: a pillar article on a head-term, supported by 4–6 cluster posts on long-tail variants that all link back to the pillar and to relevant collection or product pages.

A blog post that doesn't connect to a product you actually sell is wasted effort. Before you publish an idea, ask: which collection or product would this post naturally link to? If the answer is “none,” the topic doesn't belong on your store's blog.

The four post types worth writing

  • · Buying guides: “Best [product] for [use case]” — commercial intent, high conversion, easy to link to collections.
  • · How-to tutorials: “How to [solve specific problem]” — informational, but lets you naturally reference relevant products.
  • · Comparison posts: “[A] vs [B]” — high-intent, captures decision-stage searchers.
  • · Care/maintenance: “How to clean/care for [product]” — long-term value to existing buyers, builds repeat traffic.

Mapping ideas to search intent

Every generated idea should map to one of three intents:

  • · Informational (top-of-funnel): “what is X”, “how does X work”. Low conversion; good for brand discovery and backlinks.
  • · Commercial investigation (mid-funnel): “best X for Y”, “X vs Y”. Highest blog ROI on ecommerce — ready-to-buy traffic.
  • · Navigational/transactional: These belong on product or collection pages, not blog posts.
